I’ve avoided this movie for the longest time because Demi Moore was in it. Isn’t that silly? Even though I’ve enjoyed many of her movies, I just couldn’t believe that a movie this important with her in it would receive the historic treatment it deserved. I could not have been more wrong. I was deeply engrossed from the first scene, and could not tear myself away. Demi herself is amazing, but the screenplay and the scenery, the production and the details pulled me right into the story and would not let me go until the very last scene — and I absolutely loved the ending! This is an amazing work of art — and I’m glad I finally had a chance to see it. Once I had, I knew I had to add it to my library — a collection of what I consider to be only the best representations of our culture and our history.

There’s a disclaimer which flashes on the screen at the beginning of this 1995 film. It says it is “freely adapted from the novel” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Then it goes on to tell the famous story through the eyes of twentieth century feminism, sexual freedom and politically correct happy endings. I must admit I never did read the book, but I’ve long been aware of the general plot, set in 1666, of an adulteress forced to wear the scarlet letter “A”.

Demi Moore is cast as Hester Pryne, the adulteress, and we all know what’s going to happen to her. She’s been sent to America to establish a home; her husband is supposed to be following soon. She shocks the good people of the Massachusetts Bay Colony when she insists on living alone, with the help of a couple of bondsmen and a female black slave. I doubt if Hawthorne’s book then had the local minister, played by Gary Oldman, do a little nude swimming on Hester’s property. I also doubt that Hawthorne had her peeking, getting excited and sensuously soaking in a bathtub, displaying her own nude body and thinking about the pastor. The couple declare their love for each other but it is only after they think her husband dead that they consummate their relationship. Her pregnancy is a crime and she spends the last six months of her confinement in a horrible prison. Then she is forced to wear the scarlet letter and is shunned by all. She refuses to name her lover, and so Oldman sulks around town, looking guilty but keeping his mouth shut. This is a great role for any actress, but Demi Moore just can’t handle it. She might have a nice body but the expression on her face seems to be frozen, incapable of the subtleties, passion and despair that the role calls for. Gary Oldman is slightly better, but his portrayal of the weakling pastor is also one-dimensional.

The film is saved, however, by the role of Robert Duvall, who appears late, but yet steals the show with his impassioned portrayal of the wronged husband bent on revenge. He dominates every scene he’s in and a single expression on his face tells more about his character than the combined performances of the rest of the entire cast. The story is a good one, and it moved fast enough to hold my interest, especially since there were some action scenes added that Hawthorne had probably never intended. That’s why I can’t recommend it unless you’re willing to just relax and watch a well-plotted historical romance with mediocre acting.

The Five-Star Collection is Fox Studios’ top-of-the-line releases. Movies like French Connection have already made the list, and now Fox debuts the greatest anti-war movie of all time, M*A*S*H. The basis for the long-running TV series (which also debuted recently on DVD), M*A*S*H introduces us to the antics of Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland), Trapper John (Elliot Gould), Hot Lips (Sally Kellerman), and Radar (Gary Burghoff).

Altman’s black comic masterpiece doesn’t have a solid plot so much as a series of skits and sketches about life during the war. From golfing 5 miles from the front to suspension of marital promises to trying to figure out why people are dying all around, M*A*S*H handles the gruesomeness of stupidity of war in the only way possible – if you’re not laughing, then you’re going to be crying, so it’s probably better to laugh.

And what a way to bring this classic to DVD – the movie has never looked so good. For being 30 years old, it looks great after Fox’s extensive restoration and is presented in its original theatrical ratio of 2.35:1 with an anamorphic transfer. There’s some grain here and there, but the colors are exceptionally vibrant, with great contrast on the blacks and whites especially. The sound mix is a decent DD 2.0, which is fine considering that the movie is mostly dialogue, but the lack of a more dynamic soundtrack was noticeable during the football game and any time there was music. There are enough extras to make up for it, though, including Altman’s commentary track, three featurettes including A&E’s “The Story of M*A*S*H” and a 30-year cast reunion that’s both touching and funny.

The lack of the DD 5.1 soundtrack doesn’t sully the otherwise pristine quality of the rest of this 2-disc set. It’s a must have – get it now. Now, trooper! Now!

M*A*S*H is one of the zaniest and most intelligent satires ever produced by Hollywood. This is a war movie in which only two shots are fired — as signals in a football game. It is a masterpiece of wider appeal — even to veterans — than is suggested by its setting in Korean War military hospitals, or by its director’s explicit aim of promoting liberal opposition to the Vietnam war during the ’60s and ’70s.

The 2002 two-disk M*A*S*H special edition from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in many ways is a benchmark for DVD releases of cult movies. Picture and sound quality are high. The special feature content is entertaining and insightful.

This content includes extensive retrospective comment by director Robert Altman, producer Ingo Preminger, former studio boss Richard Zanuck, scriptwriter Ring Lardner Jr, actors including Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Sally Kellerman, Tom Skerritt, John Schuck and Gary Burghoff, and medical veterans of the Korean War. We see the 30th anniversary M*A*S*H reunion at Fox, and presentation of a studio life achievement award to Altman.

The special content gives fascinating insights into the driving half-mad genius that so often makes a great director, and of egos and bigheartedness in movie making.

Almost everyone, from the scriptwriter to the studio executives and the actors, lined up against the director at some time. Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould once even tried to get Altman fired, fearing that he would damage their careers. In the M*A*S*H special edition features they eat their words and graciously pay tribute to Altman. Former studio boss Richard Zanuck says that until Altman came along other directors were afraid of the screenplay or didn’t like it. ‘Altman came in, and seemed unruly enough to be able to understand this subject matter.’

M*A*S*H was made on a shoestring budget with Fox’s Century Ranch standing in for Korea. It emerged from chaotic creative tension as an enormous artistic and financial success. Altman accepted a salary of only $75,000. His son Mike is reputed to have made more money from writing the lyric to the keynote ballad, ‘Suicide Is Painless’, with Johnny Mandel. Altman kept costs down by casting the movie with mostly unknown and out-of-work actors. 14 of the movie’s 30 speaking roles were played by actors making their screen debut. Shooting finished three days ahead of schedule in 1969, and almost half a million dollars under budget. M*A*S*H went on to earn more than $80 million at the box office, a Palme d’Or at Cannes and an Oscar (for the heavily reworked script of formerly blacklisted scriptwriter Ring Lardner Jr), and to inspire a long-running popular TV series.

This is a rare thing: a five star classic movie in a five star DVD release.

The extended DVD of “Return of the King” is filled with many new and extended scenes that will please fans who love Tolkien’s original story. The July 26, 2004 San Diego Comic Convention featured a preview of many scenes, some introduced by Peter Jackson himself. (Some of these scenes were recently featured in the sneak preview trailer at Lord of the Rings.net, although now it seems to have been removed). In reference to a couple of reviews on the board here — if you’re waiting anxiously for the Scouring of the Shire, don’t hold your breath. That segment was NEVER filmed by Jackson, therefore it will NOT be included in the extended edition DVD. But there ARE plenty of great scenes to be included:

· We hear Christopher Lee’s booming voice echoed over a dark screen that lightened to reveal Saruman on top of Orthanc. He warns our heroes of something festering in the heart of Middle-earth and that they will all die.

· We see Frodo and Sam in their Orc disguises joining the column of Orcs as they march out of Mordor.

· There are numerous shots of the Houses of Healing with Faramir, Eowyn, and Merry all seen.

· A lot more looks to be added to the siege of Minas Tirith, as there was a bunch of new battle footage.

· Frodo and Sam venture into the Crossroads and a few clips from that section were included.

· The Mouth of Sauron is featured pretty heavily. If you’ve played EA’s Return of the King video game you’ll recognize the scene. The Mouth of Sauron rides out of the Black Gate and presents Frodo’s mithril coat to the Fellowship.

· Aragorn reveals himself to Sauron by approaching the Palantir in Minas Tirith and wields Anduril to show that the Heir of Elendil was alive.

· We get to see more of Saruman later in the preview when he knocks Wormtongue down and also fires a giant fireball from his staff that engulfs Gandalf on Shadowfax.

· There’s more of Frodo and Sam in Mordor after they join the column of Orcs and before they discard their disguises. In one scene, Sam looks to the dark sky of Mordor and tells Frodo that he can see light as one little star can be seen glimmering through the clouds.

· And yes, we will finally get to see Gandalf facing down the Witch King. It happens exactly as we’ve seen, but when Gandalf holds up his staff the Witch King pulls out his sword and holds it to the sky where it spouts flames. As he brings it down, the air around the burning sword is distorted.

That was just the preview. New Line treated fans to three full clips, with the third introduced by Peter Jackson himself:

· There was a nice scene of Pippin and Faramir in Gondor where Faramir explains to the Hobbit how the small Gondorian armor he was wearing belonged to a young son of the Steward when he was a kid. Faramir further explains how Boromir was always the soldier and he wasn’t.

· A scene that takes place about five days after they were healed by Aragorn features Faramir and Eowyn on a balcony at the Houses of Healing where Eowyn falls for Faramir.

· The Paths of the Dead is extended from where it ends in the theatrical cut. After Aragorn poses his offer, the dead laugh and go back into the walls. A massive earthquake starts, and the Three Hunters must escape an avalanche of millions of skulls.

· Described, but not shown, another scene expanded in this edition is the scene where Pippin finds Merry on the battlefield. Now, Pippin searches the field for an entire day after everyone else has gone back into the city. He finally locates Merry at night in the new version of the scene.

Just a few weeks to go till the “Return of the King” extended edition hits the stores!

Peter Jackson proved me wrong when I said, like many people, that Lord of the Rings would be a bust: Spielberg-adventure at best, Lucas-disaster at worst. Had I known Tolkien’s classic was in the hands of the guy who directed Heavenly Creatures, I would have been more optimistic. As it turns out, my expectations were completely overturned. In some ways the films are actually better than the books, especially in terms of emotional power. Competent actors, amazing cinematography, and a brilliant music score combine to offer us Middle-Earth as we’d never imagined it.

Fellowship of the Ring is the most polished film, with its elegant episodic pacing. We start in the idyllic world of the hobbits and flee with Ringwraiths hot on our heels; we rest in Elrond’s sanctuary and plunge into Moria; we come out grieving and console ourselves in Galadriel’s safe (yet unsettling) dream-wood, and then wind up surrounded by Uruk-hai. This is a quintessential fantasy road-journey containing three episodes within an episode, each beginning in a haven and followed by a dark journey. The pacing is flawless, and the plot unfolds to a perfect beat.

Two Towers is the ambiguous film. It’s excellent (or at least the extended version is) but structured in a way that the hobbits become sidelined by the Rohan story. As they are the soul of Tolkien’s epic, we feel slightly nonplussed at their consignment to B-storylines. Ironically, the film is a showcase for cgi characters Gollum and Treebeard, who manage to steal the show from within these storylines.

Return of the King is the most dramatic film, tragic on almost a biblical level, and certainly the most satisfying. I can understand why Elijah Wood calls it “better than one and two combined”. It centers on the hopeless mission to Mount Doom, which, as every fan knows, is the heart of the story. Around this we’re bombarded by apocalyptic chaos and destruction on the Pelennor Fields, followed by Aragorn’s hopeless march on the Black Gate. We finish at the Grey Havens, the best ending in literary and cinematic history, which encapsulates all of Tolkien’s themes: courage, friendship, suffering, and passing on. It just doesn’t get better than this.

Peter Jackson deserves more accolades than I’m capable of heaping to the point of overkill. Minor quibbles aside, the extended versions of these films are masterpieces to be treasured as much as the books. Tolkien’s classic may be pure, but the movie’s cinematography takes us where even the written word cannot go. Tolkien’s writing is irreplaceable, but Howard Shore’s music taps deeper into Middle-Earth’s soul. The text is sacred, but the scriptwriters changed it anyway so that it could actually work on screen. The entire project has been too good to be true, and I’m still in awe of it.

Sam Peckinpah’s ‘The Wild Bunch’ is a masterpiece western. Not the best ever made, but close. So don’t think I don’t like this movie because I love it. However, since Mexicans are its villains, perhaps you’d be interested to read an opinion from this side of the border.

The Mexico of ‘The Wild Bunch’ looks more like a metaphor than a real place. It is both Heaven and Hell; the theatre where the bunch will find Death but also Redemption. Accordingly, every Mexican depicted in the picture is either a saint or a monster (no middle ground here, except for the Mexican member of the Bunch, who is aptly named “Angel”, although a fallen one). This serves the story splendidly, for it’s meant to be an epic ballad and not a travelogue, but it does jolt the Mexican viewer because the “good Mexico” is portrayed so idyllic it’s unreal, while the “bad Mexico” is very, very accurate; in fact, no American movie has captured the look, sound, feel, texture and carnage of the Mexican Revolution as this one has (even if the grandiose final scene, where the Bunch kills hundreds of heavily armed soldiers all by themselves and none of the four falls down even when riddled by bullets, defies all logic!). Perhaps that’s why it was banned in Mexico back when it was released in 1969.

Funny, for it was filmed in Mexico as well. The Texas bordertown you see at the begining of the story is actually Parras, Coahuila, and many of its citizens acted as extras in the movie: white ones as “Texans”, brown ones as -what else?- Mexicans! Don Raúl Madero, brother of Francisco I. Madero, the man who started the Mexican Revolution, appears …as a Texan! Even the two German officers are Mexican! So, as you can see, we Mexicans come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and hardly fit these two tiresome “noble peasant”-”greaser bandito” stereotypes American movies seem so comfortable with! I hope some day Hollywood realizes this and “walk the extra mile” to portray us for what we are: a very complex and diverse society. Neither saints, nor monsters, and certainly not mere bowling pins!

P.S.: Many great Mexican directors, all personal friends of Peckinpah, appear in the film. Emilio “Indio” Fernández (Mapache) and Chano Urueta (Angel’s grandfather) were the best of our cinema’s Golden Age. Fernando Wagner (German officer) was also a competent theatre director, and Alfonso Arau (Herrera) is best known for his international hit ‘Like Water for Chocolate’. Jorge Russek (Zamorra) was an outstanding photographer for National Geographic, and Sonia Amelio (Teresa) is a world-aclaimmed dancer (she was even awarded with an “Order of Lenin” back in the Soviet Union). And just for the record, the word “Mapache” (”racoon”) stands for “coward thief”. No Mexican general, no matter how corrupt, would use, I believe, such a nickname! And since Mapache is “a killer working for Huerta”, the action takes place in 1913, not 1916 (Huerta was ousted in early 1914).

There’s not much that can be noted about Sam Peckinpah’s brilliant 1969 western epic “The Wild Bunch” that has not already been written. It was an unanticipated, influential work where all things came together, but for a moment, the end product a huge, sweeping canvas of intimacy between comrades, violence between combatants, desperate anger amidst changing times. Part Kurosawa, part Siegel, part Fuller, part Ford, Peckinpah combined his inspirations with a healthy dose of 1960s rebellion producing the ultimate work of his generation, and one of the greatest westerns in history. It was Peckinpah’s great fortune that the right actors were available for this film – William Holden and Robert Ryan in the twilight of their memorable careers, Ernest Borgnine with just enough youth to be a perfect and loyal presence, Edmond O’Brien chewing up the scenery with tobacco-stained teeth, and of course Peckinpah friends Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones and Warren Oates in salty supporting roles. It was also his great fortune cinematographer Lucien Ballard and composer Jerry Fielding were also on hand to participate in his steadfast vision.

Peckinpah also had something to prove at this point in his career, when he was still a hungry director with a vision, before alcoholism, disillusionment and celebrity status took hold. He hid nothing from viewers, and his contradictory heart was laid bare in “The Wild Bunch.” The direction and editing during the violent moments of this film – the opening bank robbery and the concluding battle with the Mexican army – are some of the most unforgettable scenes ever put on film. But ironically, and this was usually the case in most Peckinpah films, it is the quiet moments one remembers. Pike (Holden) and Dutch’s (Borgnine) melancholy conversation next to a campfire; The Bunch riding out of Angel’s village as if in a funeral procession; Deke (Ryan) taking Pike’s pistol from it’s holster, gently holding it in his hand; and of course Pike standing in the doorway and mouthing two simple words, “Let’s go.”

And of course you have The Walk, in which Holden, Borgnine, Oates and Ben Johnson quietly begin loading their guns, cocking them, arming themselves, smiling at one another, standing shoulder to shoulder. There’s not much left for these forgotten outlaws who have lived past their time. Just a code of honor, just their self respect. And so they Walk into the heart of the Mexican army to retrieve their comrade Angel, a prisoner and personal enemy of General Mapache. These surviving members of The Wild Bunch are free to go, but Angel, youthful, love-struck, rebellious, was one of them. They are not going to leave their comrade.

After viewing the extraordinary documentary “The Wild Bunch: An Album In Montage” and seeing the rare footage of Peckinpah literally improvising The Walk, walking alongside Holden, Borgnine, Oates and Johnson, inventing by instinct, one realizes how fiercely creative this man was as a director. This film was his moment in time, his vision, his idea, Peckinpah’s nightmarish and amazing dream.

Peckinpah never really made a film quite like “The Wild Bunch” again. Of course, no director ever really has before or since. His uneven career of 14 films, some good, some not, has been celebrated and honored. Peckinpah the man, adorned in faded jeans and bandanna, certainly perpetuated his myth-like status. But in the end, you will always have “The Wild Bunch,” an unforgettable film, raw, gritty, whiskey-soaked, sublime. I cry whenever I watch this film. I cry in awe. All things came together for Peckinpah on “The Wild Bunch,” and the moment is everlasting.

I love this DVD. I’m fortunate to have an incredible home theater system (162″ front projection, 9-speaker Yamaha sound system) in my loft with 14′ ceilings. When something is great on this system it’s just totally amazing. (But this system can also be very unkind, it makes plain any deficiencies in the video or audio.)

Luis Miguel “Vivo” (DTS) has zero deficiencies. None. It’s an amazing concert video.

If you are looking for a great concert on DVD, impressive lighting & visual effects, great 6.1 channel DTS audio, an energetic audience (having a great time), a dynamic performance with lots of excitement, then “Vivo” is for you. It builds exactly like a great concert should, lots of passion and increasing energy. The editing was outstanding, combining well-recorded video footage from many cameras. The editors know how to manage pace, just like any good DJ, and the concert successfully builds up energy throughout. This was a high production value concert with some very good laser-work, visual effects, and pyrotechnics.

If you have a large-screen system (like home theater), along with a good audio setup, you will totally “fall into” this concert. It’s nearly as good as being there live and up front. I’ve already watched this DVD three or four times completely and many more partial viewings. You definitely won’t grow tired of this great performance and recording.

In case it’s not already quite clear, I think this is an amazing DVD! The DTS audio is very well done, with great use of soundstage and separation to reproduce the feel of a concert arena. This DVD makes a great example for the wonders of DTS. Enjoy!

This is, by far one of the best DVD concerts I have seen. The production is absolutely perfect (thanks to Tall Pony Productions)Luis Miguel as always displays his great talent. His voice is clear, powerful and unmistakeable(just another day at work for Luis). The camera angles and the overall mix of instruments, voices and crowd reaction is brilliant. Luis Miguel fans will love the bonus material!

Any film that can gather the family together for a fun, wholesome, and entertaining view, and hold the interest of all for it’s entire length, gets 5 stars in my book. “Casper” is one of those films. It may not go down as some great piece of cinematic art, but it is one that all generations can enjoy, will leave you with a smile, and something to talk about with kids afterwards.

Based on the old comic book stories, “Casper” is a very friendly but very lonely ghost. He lives in an old mansion, that has seen better days. He is not alone in this huge house though, he lives with his three very nasty(but funny) uncles,”Stretch”, “Stinky” and “Fatso”. Casper only wants someone to move in,so he could have a friend, the uncles on the other hand, do their very best to scare away any visitors.

So when a greedy woman inherits the property, and believes there is a buried treasure inside, she hires an array of ‘ghostbusters’ to rid the house of all spirits. None seem to be able to handle this terrible trio, until one day a ghost psychiatrist and his lonely daughter(also looking for a friend),move in and try to tame the threesome. From there it’s a fun and wild ride, and a touching story of friendship.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casper! Click Here

The film has a terrific cast that works well with the wonderful animation and special effects. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci are the father and daughter team that befriend these spirits. Cathy Moriarty(”Forget Paris”), and Eric Idle as her bumbling assistant add their talents as they go for the treasure.Lots of big names are cameoed throughout. Don Novello, and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles of Father Guido Sarducci, and ghostbuster Dr. Raymond Stantz for brief appearances, just to name a couple.

The voices including Brad Garrett as “Fatso” are marvelous, and you can never go wrong when James Horner scores a film with just the right touches.

It’s rated PG for some occassional mild language and thematic elements, and at an hour and a half, it just the right length, and is a delightful way to spend some laugh out loud family time together.

Ghostly fun……enjoy…..Laurie

Who says there are no such things as ghosts? Not if there is the ghostly inhabitants of Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine!
This desolate mansion is then, in the words of one of the members of the Ghostly Trio of Whipstaff, ‘intruded’ by Kat Harvey (Christina Ricci) and her eccentric father Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman), a ghost therapist. Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) had hired Dr. Harvey to exorcise the ghosts, including Casper the friendly ghost and his three obnoxious uncles, Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie, aspiring to gain Whipstaff’s ‘buried gold’.
Intertwining humour, all-time ‘floating’ fun and a modern Cinderella story, ‘Casper’ promises to please as a movie which is compelling, hilarious, captivating, heart-warming, witty and above all, truly ‘fleshtastic’.
‘Casper’ is recommended for any audience, regardless of age. … ‘Casper’ … manages to appear endearing and ultimately special.
The magic of Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci as well as that of director Brad Silberling, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and other producers weaves between each and every scene to eventually lift us off our feet.
Above all, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Casper is my all time favourite character. Truly fleshtastic. BOOlistic! You won’t BOOlieve it until you see it.

This is a wonderful collection for those who care only about seeing their favorite Frasier episodes or the ones they missed. Hands down, Frasier is the wittiest, most imaginative sitcom since the Dick Van Dyke show. Only the brilliant, much-missed MST3K made me laugh out loud as consistently. I own Frasier Seasons One through Three, and even though I love watching my favorite episodes a second or third time, the extras are disappointing. The Bulldog featurette and the Maris extras on this Season Three set are snooze-worthy. Why rehash the same material that’s on the disc? We fans want behind-the-scenes footage, rehearsal footage, bloopers, deleted scenes, etc. We want to see John Mahoney flub his lines and crack everyone up! And we all know that Moose is hardly a one-take dawg. I’m sure the producers have plenty of outtake reels hanging around. More commentary, outtakes, bloopers, deleted scenes, please, for Season Four!!! Please listen to your fans, Kelsey!

Frasier marked the end of the shows that thrived on quick wit and the constant juggle versus the occasional belly laugh. This collection is some of the best of the series and another reminder of an era that is started out with the likes of the Cosby Show, Night Court, Cheers and now is sadly coming to an end.

Mac is a good boy- bright, sensitive, and a little shy. His imaginary friend Blooregard, or Bloo for short, is mischievous, self centered and lazy. But they’re the best of friends. Mac’s mother insists age 8 is too old to have an imaginary friend. She means well, but Mac and Bloo refuse to part. So Mac secretly brings Bloo to Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, where many other colorful imaginary friends live because their creators gave them up. The other friends are hoping to be adopted by a new kid, but Mac doesn’t want anyone to adopt Bloo if he’s to live there. So Madame Foster, for whom the home is named, agrees to a deal with Mac, that as long as he visits Bloo every day, Bloo will always be his and no other child will ever be able to adopt him. So now Bloo has a new home, makes new friends, gets into new mischeif, and still sees his best buddy Mac every day.

I love this cartoon! It’s so funny, even by adult standards. I also admire it because it has virtually no “potty humor”, so parents can feel confident in letting their kids get into it. It doesn’t come accross as “educational”, but does handle things like friendship, loyalty, courage, peer pressure, self esteem, and other such virtues. On TV it’s rated Y7, probably because some younger kids might find some of the imaginary friends a little scary looking, particularly the “Extremesaurs”, aka the imaginary friends created by “jerky teenage boys”, but they don’t make very many apperances. But even if some of the friends are “monsters”, you can’t find any funnier or nicer, other than maybe in puppet form. =)

And that just about does it! I have no regrets in getting this in the least, and now look forward to season 2 being released. I hope to be among the first in line to get that one, too! =)

Ok, ok…I know this is a cartoon series, but I must say that I find it hilarious! I am 31, and my son is soon to be 6. He and I watch this show together every weeknight at 7pm, and it doesn’t matter that we’ve seen the episodes several times! They are just as funny each time! Also – if you have a child, watching them laugh at the characters is worth the price alone! The show has jokes and obvious sight gags that are geared towards adults….yet it has ‘childish’ humor and moralistic storylines. You wouldn’t think that your child could learn anything from this show, but they do! Friendship, honesty, being trustworthy, diligence…..it’s all here, along with fart jokes, fast-talking Goo, and the self-centered Bloo. Trust me- if you like cartoons AT ALL, you will love this series!

Amazon has combined the reviews for the Blu-ray and standard DVD versions of this set, which aren’t exactly the same in their features. This review is for the Blu-ray version. My review of the standard DVD version is here too, so be sure you’re reading the one you’re interested in.

The movie is excellent, a Christmas classic (see below). Should you upgrade to the new Ultimate edition if you already have the 2006 Blu-ray edition? That depends on how much you like memorabilia. The new edition is a repackaging of the 2006 edition, with a couple new non-DVD extras:

– a collectible retro Christmas cookie tin (the container for the set)

– a strand of leg-lamp Christmas lights (Blu-ray exclusive)

Those look like fun, if you’re into that kind of stuff. Amazon has a photo of the tin and a second photo that shows the tin and the leg-lamp lights. (The announcement for this set said that the items from the standard DVD set (here) would be included in this one, but that isn’t correct.)

The Blu-ray DVD won’t be remastered from the previous one. The video quality of the 2006 release was only fair for hi-def, soft with fairly good color, with fair mono sound.

The 2006 Blu-ray didn’t include everything that was on the HD or the 2-disc SD set. Here’s what’s actually included:

– audio commentary by director/co-writer Bob Clark and star Peter Billingsley (Ralphie)

– Another Christmas Story featurette, includes interviews with Clark and a few members of the cast

– Get a Leg Up featurette, about the making and ongoing sale of the (in)famous leg lamp

– A History of the Daisy Red Ryder featurette, on the object of great desire’s actual history

– original theatrical trailer

The features from earlier editions that aren’t included are trivia and decoder games, readings (audio only) from Jean Shepherd, and an ad for the real leg lamp.

Now, about the really good stuff, the movie. A Christmas Story is that odd film that appeals to a cross-section of viewers who often can’t agree on what to watch. Fans of sweet Christmas cheer are happily joined by people with a more jaundiced eye to the holiday. To be sure, the movie leans more to the sweet than the sour, but it has enough edge and good-natured twistedness to please some of our darker Christmas angels too. It conveys a genuinely warm nostalgia and some sharp, sometimes pretense-deflating observations about human nature.

The story is set at some indefinite time around 1940 in an Indiana town approaching the holidays. Young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants only one thing for Christmas, the Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Lightning Loader Range Model Air Rifle with a compass in the stock. (That is, a BB gun, a very particular one.) He plans carefully well in advance how to lay the groundwork for this while avoiding the dreaded rebuff, but almost everyone says it anyway: “You’ll put your eye out!” The relentless struggle for the one true gift develops alongside several other small stories and amusing details, a tongue-on-frozen-pole triple-dog dare, facing the local bully, the notorious leg lamp, the Santa slide, Peking Duck for Christmas, and several others, each memorable in itself.

The actors aren’t very well known, but they’re all just right. There is narration throughout, representing an older Ralphie, done by the originator of the story, Jean Shepard, also just right.

This movie, made in 1983, has gradually become a favorite Christmas classic, now shown in an annual 24-hour Christmas marathon on cable, which attracts a huge number of viewers. If you’ve never seen it, give it a try, even if you have a little Scrooge in you, and you’ll probably enjoy it.

Don’t get me wrong – I love “A Christmas Story,” and I would give the film a 5-star review. The issue here is that the 2008 DVD release is EXACTLY the same as the 2003 version (aside from some slightly different artwork on the slipcover and case). There are no new special features, and the print quality is the same as before. There is absolutely no need for the studio to release this needless double dip DVD. If you don’t already own the 2003 version, then this is a must have DVD; if you do, there’s no need to buy the new version, unless you go for the Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which has some neat extras (which admittedly aren’t worth the price if you already own the film on DVD). Check out the Blue-ray version if you’re looking for slightly improved picture quality.
