I believe the one thing above all else that really made the classic series “Bewitched”, so special was the near perfect chemistry between actress Elizabeth Montgomery and actor Dick York as the beautiful housewife witch Samantha and her often harried but always loving husband Darrin. This well thought out teaming of two performers who were so compatible together and who actually seemed to be like a real husband and wife on screen certainly helped to carry “Bewitched”, to the incredible success it enjoyed right from Episode One. By the beginning of Season Five, which is now happily being released onto DVD, the classic comedy series had really hit its full stride. With its ratings still high and with the show still collecting an annual batch of Emmy nominations the future for “Bewitched”, looked very bright indeed. Season Five despite being very entertaining, as every true fan will know unfortunately has a dark side to it in that Dick York’s ongoing back problems meant that he began to miss episodes as the show progressed through its fourth year and on into the fifth. About half way through Season Five with Dick York’s health problems growing worse with him often unable to perform, the character of Darrin was repeatedly written out of many of the stories thus loosing that famed “Sam and Darrin”, basis to the whole story. His characters absense was usually explained away by having Darrin “away on business”, during the episode. Unfortunately York’s health crisis didn’t improve and he was forced to leave the series all together before the end of the season. It wasn’t certain whether he would return for Season Six at that time which explains why an earlier filmed episode “Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City”, was held back and shown as the last episode of Season Five.

Despite the tragedies going on behind the scenes during this season on “Bewitched”, for the most part it’s a terrific season with some wonderful episodes, a few of which even tackle some quite serious social issues that are timely even today. Ironically enough in the light of Dick York’s declining health some of the earlier episodes in Season Five such as “Samantha’s Wedding Present”, and especially the classic “Mirror Mirror on the Wall” in my belief contain some of his greatest and very funniest work and give no indication of the terrible agony he was usually in with his back at this late stage of his involvement with “Bewitched”.

Season Five of “Bewitched”, holds some real favourites for me and a few of what I feel are the standout episodes are listed below.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bewitched – The Complete Fifth Season! Click Here

“Samantha’s Wedding Present”, which introduces a more tanned and blonde Elizabeth Montgomery in a story borrowing heavily from the Sci Fi classic “The Incredible Shrinking Man”, wherby Endora shrinks Darrin down to miniature size which causes him some harrowing experiences when he encounters the Kravitz’s over sized new dog and is captured by an Irish drunk who thinks Darrin is a Leprechaun who he’ll only release when he grants him three wishes.

“Mirror, Mirror on the Wall”, a great favourite of mine with an absolutely hilarious performance by Dick York when Endora zaps a vanity spell on him making him the most egocentric and vain person imaginable. The sight of Dick York swishing around and camping it up in a Gold Lame Suit, hippy beads and Elvis-like sideburns will have you laughing out loud.

“Samantha’s Super Maid”, a great performance by Mabel Albertson as the interfering Mrs Stephens Snr. who forces Samantha to hire a new maid much to her and Darrin’s opposition considering the witchcraft happening in the house all the time. Endora and Samantha join forces to undo Mrs Stephen’s plans to “give Samantha more time away from home duties to socialise with the people who can help boost Darrin up the ladder of success”.

“Going Ape”, An episode Dick York missed but a very funny story of Tabitha changing an ape into a man who Larry feels has great potential for McMann and Tate’s latest ad campaign. Desite his initial reluctance to allow Tabitha to change him back the Man/Ape gets bored with all the attention and with Samantha’s help literally “goes ape”, in the television studio causing complete mayhem and forcing Larry to fire him.

“Tabitha’s Weekend”, Another episode without Dick York but a great family domestic story when Phyllis attempts to have Tabitha stay for the weekend much to Samantha’s opposition. Phyllis’ plans however go astray when Endora and Samantha both also turn up causing all sorts of domestic tensions especially between long time rivals Endora and Phyllis. The resulting mayhem causes Phyllis to develop one of her famous “sick headaches”.

“The Battle of Burning Oak”, a wonderful story and another great favourite of mine where Endora turns Darrin into a terrible snob who aspires to join the exclusive Burning Oak Country Club. However when Samantha learns of the type of discrimination and “screening” used to gain membership, at the club she sets out to teach the snobs a very humbling lesson in tolerance and acceptance of others regardless of creed, colour, or status, with hilarious results. Samantha’s catty lunch with the snobby “ladies”, at the club is a comic highlight.

“Daddy Does His Thing”, not really a great episode but significant to all “Bewitched”, buffs in that this was the final episode Dick York actually filmed before collapsing with a massive seizure. Quite heart breaking to watch as you can clearly see for the first time how terribly ill Dick York was during its filming.

“Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City”, an earlier episode held back to finish the season off with a Dick York appearance. Complications arise for Darrin when Endora casts a spell that makes him disappear everytime he attempts to speak Spanish to a potential client group while in Mexico City. Samantha saves the day with a few spells of her own that allows Darrin to deliver a long dinner speech in both English and Spanish.

This fifth season of Bewitched was the last good one before the show began to run out of ideas (evident by the recycling of earlier episode plots in the sixth season onward). Here’s the list of the episodes you’ll be getting plus a brief description:

That might not seem very relevant, but if you are familiar at all with the original Go Nagai “Cutie Honey” series, then you know that Cutie Honey is all about getting naked, and with gravia idol Eriko Sato playing the title role, a woman who has shown time and time again that she has no problem getting naked, it is even more surprising. During her famous “Honey Flash” sequence, it shifts to a CG animated figure, and even that doesn’t get naked. Now, with that out of the way, we can talk about the movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cutie Honey – The Movie! Click Here

This is definitely not going to be a film for everyone, but it is a lot of fun. “Cutie Honey” really is just a big cartoon, featuring live people. There is no attempt whatsoever to make it modern or gutsy. Director Hideaki Anno, best know for his phenomenal anime series “Neon Genisis Evangelion”, has decided to through all of his angst out the window and go straight for the pinkest vision of cuteness that he can possibly muster.

Eriko Sato works her way through an impossible number of cute costumes, or just runs around in her underwear, all the while being light and naively unaware of her own attributes. Her Cutie Honey suit isn’t the famous original, but it is even more pink and works well. The villains are over the top, at about the same level as a Sentai Power Rangers show. The acting is just good enough to make sure everyone is having a good time, and the fight scenes are a blast. Both remind me a lot of Kabuki theater, where everything is completely exaggerated beyond any believability, and that works in the context. Sure, there is some plot stitched here and there, to give the whole thing a a start and a finish, but it isn’t really all that important. Superstar Koda Kumi powers her way through the catchy Cutie Honey theme song, and I dare you not to catch yourself humming along even if you can’t understand the Japanese.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cutie Honey – The Movie! Click Here

If all this sounds like a blast to you, then you are going to love “Cutie Honey”. Shut off your brain and allow the pink to wash over you. However, if you demand even the slightest bit of sense out of a film, then you are probably going to hate it. Its up to you.

If you’re looking for a good time, this is it. Great fun, humor, action, heart, and Cutie Honey style. I felt satisfied with it and had a smile on my face through most of it. Someone on here complained about it being full screen…? I don’t know, mine had the black lines at the top and bottom so I assumed it was wide screen. Regardless, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything.
Car Insurance On Line Quote
Cheap Automobile Insurance Quote

shocks you, scares you, thrills you, chills you, makes you laugh all at once almost. highly recommend this one. it’s different roles for each character. and they play their parts part well. I was definitely shocked after seeing this the first time thru. I shall watch it again and again. the ending is nice. the story is very twisted at times. but I think it helps the viewer think of what might happen next before they show it. I am glad I have this on dvd. a true shocking classic movie. That goes to show you that when you do “very bad things” sooner or later your conscience will eat away at you for them and you’ll either beg and confess or something else. quite a shock of a movie they made. but it’s worth the watch always

This one was recommended to me by my sister, and I would have liked to say that I really enjoyed, but I didn’t. It starts off with the groom-to-be Kyle Fisher (Jon Favreau) leaving for Las Vegas with his four buddies (played by Leland Orser, Christian Slater, Daniel Stern, and Jeremy Piven) for a wild stag party. However, things go horribly wrong when the Asian stripper (played by Kobé Tai) is impaled, literally and metaphorically, to the wall. To cover this up, they kill the hotel security guard, then dismember and bury their remains in the desert. Even though they swear to secrecy, the problem doesn’t go away, and soon they’re killing more people and turning on each other.

A lot of the characters in “Very Bad Things” are very unredeemable and it’s hard to feel any sympathy for them (Boyd, for one, played by Slater), save for perhaps Adam (Daniel Stern), who has an overactive conscience. And as for being a comedy–I don’t think so. It’s very violent. Horror fans might like this–however, being one, I wasn’t expecting this; I was expecting a dark comedy. I only laughed a few times when some of the guys got what they deserved, but more than not I was grimacing. So, yeah, in a twisted way it is funny, but this isn’t a movie I’d necessarily recommend, unless you’re really into black, black–and I mean black–comedies. It’s almost an acquired taste.

In summary: as a comedy it was bad, very bad; but as a thriller, it was good. So, the movie averages out to 3½ stars for me.
Low Auto Insurance Rates
Car Insurance On Line Quote

Buy,Download, Or Stream Babylon 5 – The Movie Collection! Click Here

For those of you new to all things Babylon 5, here is my run down of this set:

1. THE GATHERING – As the series pilot it is a decent effort. It’s best to see this one before watching Season One but it’s fine if you catch it anytime. In fact this one is worth viewing again after watching seasons 1-3 to catch A LOT of foreshadowing. You can’t realize the of traps JMS has set just in this pilot. I give this one 3.5/5.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Babylon 5 – The Movie Collection! Click Here

2. IN THE BEGINNING – Holy crap! 5/5. By far the best effort of JMS and his crew, second only to Severed Dreams (episode in Season 3). Anyone can thoroughly enjoy this this one without ever seeing one episode of Babylon 5 (like my wife) there are some big spoilers. So do yourself a HUGE favor. Do not watch this movie until after you have completed Seasons 1 through 3. Also, this one features Chris Franke’s best score. This one alone is nearly worth the purchase price.

3. THIRDSPACE – I like this one more than many others might. It introduces a H.P. Lovecraft type of element to the Babylon 5 universe. Personally I really like this new wrinkle and wish that it received further exploration. Catch this one after about the 7 episode in Season 4. This one features a crazy (perhaps even ridiculous) battle scene and a girl fight at the end that is well worth seeing. 4/5.

4. RIVER OF SOULS – A story about the Soul Hunters (introduced early in Season One). Martin Sheen is in it (a bit of a miscast for some people). Watch this before the last episode of Season 5 (Sleeping In Light). I like Franke’s score alot. This one focuses more on some of the peripheral characters like Lochley and Zach which makes for a nice change IMHO. Tracy Scoggins in lingerie = yummy! Also, another series regular has a terrific performance at the climax that should not be missed. 3.5/5.

5. CALL TO ARMS – This is meant to serve as the transition to JMS’s next Babylon 5 series: CRUSADE. IMHO, Chen’s score is totaly out of place and is a distraction. The effects are not as good as the other films as well. On other hand, there are some new and interesting characters (many which become part of the Crusade series) introduced that still make this one worth watching. Peter Woodward and Tony Todd really shine in this one. 3/5

The release of Babylon 5 The Movies on DVD marks the closing of the critically acclaimed Babylon 5 series, arguably one of the best Science Fiction series to date. Having said that, it’s important to remember that this box set should not be viewed as a starting point for first-time Babylon 5 viewers.

As indicated by the editor’s review, the only DVD that can be viewed first is ‘The Gathering’, the reworked pilot which is good as an introduction to the universe and the characters. The other movies were made either during or after the conclusion of the B5 series and as such contain many elements that would completely destroy a first-time viewer’s experience of the five year arc.

The movies ‘In The Beginning’, ‘Thirdspace’, ‘River of Souls’ and ‘A Call to Arms’ are all welcome additions to the existing B5 universe, allowing us to see just how far the characters have developed through the series. Although the self-contained nature of ‘Thirdspace’ and ‘River of Souls’ in particular do not provide the level of mounting suspense that we’re used to in the series, they’re still worth watching and allow the B5 flame to burn just that little bit longer.

To summarise: If you are a first-time Babylon 5 viewer, you would be better off to purchase the single DVD ‘Gathering / In The Beginning’, watch ONLY ‘The Gathering’ and then work your way through the season DVD box sets before moving onto the movies. If you are a fan or have a good understanding of the B5 universe, this is an excellent companion to the five B5 season sets.
Young Drivers Insurance
First Car Insurance Rates

As a teacher of Classical Greek and Roman Mythology I was looking forward to “Troy.” In the past I have put together a unit on the Trojan War that included not only Homer’s epic poem the “Iliad,” but also the plays of Euripides and Aeschylus and other ancient works on the stories of these characters. In other words I am familiar with this story to the extent that when Briseis showed up wearing a garment with long sleeves I was upset that we did not get to see the lovely arms that were part of her usual epithet. So, suffice it to say, that when characters who survived the Trojan War started dying in this film, I was not exactly happy. Consequently, the truth is that the less you know about the Trojan War of classical mythology, the more you will enjoy Wolfgang Petersen’s “Troy.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy – The Director’s Cut! Click Here

I have no problem with the idea that Homer and the other ancients have to be adapted in making a modern motion picture about the Trojan War. The decision to eliminate the gods is appropriate, getting away from the idea that this was a ten year war makes sense, and if the alliance of the Greeks is now political rather than as part of an oath sworn by the princes who were suitors for Helen’s hand, I consider that to be legitimate. I do not understand why Iphigenia, Cassandra, and Hecuba are all eliminated but there are not fatal omissions. But when you start rewriting who gets killed that is going a bit too far, especially when one premature death starts a chain effect that means Athens will never develop the jury system, which means we probably lose out on it too. David Benioff’s screenplay was “inspired” by Homer’s “Iliad,” which at least is an honest way to characterize what he did in this script, but I still do not have to like it or endorse it.

The big selling point for this film was not Homer but rather Brad Pitt as Achilles. Stories abound about how Pitt worked six months to get in shape for this film, gave up smoking, and ended up hurting his Achilles tendon in one of those profound ironies that indicates that maybe the gods were not pleased with what was happening in this film. Pitt certainly looks good, not just in terms of taking several opportunities to display the line of his nude body, but in how he carries himself as Achilles. The whole idea is that this guy is the greatest warrior on the face of the planet and Pitt exudes that with the way he strides across the sands of Troy. Even more impressive is the choreography for the fights, because Pitt’s movements are so smooth and powerful, especially compared with that of Eric Bana’s Hector, that you do not doubt that this guy is in a league by himself as a warrior. I also like the way he uses the distinctive form of his shield when fighting. They thought this part out quite a bit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy – The Director’s Cut! Click Here

The fight choreography was worked out by Simon Crane, the film’s stunt coordinator and second unit director, who describes Achilles as fighting with a boxing style but with the velocity of a speed skater and the agility of a panther. They also come up with a nice touch in that Achilles looks slightly to the side at his opponent until he is ready to come in for the kill. The best fight sequences of “Troy” are when Achilles is fighting. The giant battle sequences of computerized soldiers are not as impressive, mainly because the camera is always in motion and the cutting is so fast that we are left with an impression of the battle rather than always being able to tell what is going on (which has become my constant complaint with most movies with large battle sequences).

Bana does a good job of capturing Hector’s nobility without turning him into a marble statue, while Peter O’Toole fills the role of Priam naturally. On the Trojan side the problematic character is Paris (Orlando Bloom), again because of the writing more than the performance. Priam has negotiated peace between Troy and the Sparta of King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), but that is destroyed when Paris persuades Helen (Diane Kruger) to run away with him. Both Hector and Priam know that Paris is wrong and their reasons for supporting him and thereby dooming Troy ring hollow (the less than stellar “Helen of Troy” television miniseries did a nice job of providing a solid motivation for the Trojans to protect Helen).

It you want to draw a clear distinction between Homer’s story of Achilles and that of Benioff it is that the former is about the rage of Achilles (see the first line of the “Iliad”) and the latter adds an equally strong love element. The one character whose role is most inflated in this version is that of Briseis (Rose Byrne), the Trojan slave girl who comes between Achilles and Agamemnon (Brian Cox), the king of kings for the Greeks. This change becomes the reasoning behind how the film rewrites the end game of the Trojan War, although I still do not understand why some of the key characters get to live happily ever after. But since Pitt’s performance dominates the film and he is clearly the horse that director Wolfgang Petersen is riding to make the whole thing work, it makes sense that he has to be around until the very end.

The good news is that when I teach mythology after this DVD comes out my students will probably enjoy attacking Benioff’s changes in the original stories of Greek mythology in their papers. I think this will definitely help them understand why the writings of Homer and the other ancients are considered classics.

Features 2 new extras: “Troy In Focus” a 23 minute interview and a new 5 minute introduction by Wolfgang Peterson. Most of the other special features have been ported over from the previous edition.

First the most important question is whether or not this double dip is worth it? Absolutely because the additional footage only enhances the film giving it additional depth. The transfer is striking (regardless of which format)as well. In many respects this isn’t a double dip because we get a film that is superior to the original version.

Unlike “The Illiad” Wolfgang Petersen’s film “Troy” seemed too short and for good reason; Petersen had to trim the film down to a shorter length for its theatrical release. Luckily Warner gave Petersen the opportunity to revisit this epic film and add more meat to the bones of a film that had the look of an epic but was missing much of the emotional depth.

Petersen restores roughly 32 minutes to the film giving additional depth to the various relationships in the film. While “Troy” isn’t a perfect epic, it’s much improved. James Horner’s score is still occasionally obtrusive but the overall impact of Petersen’s film with its marvelous performances from Brian Cox (who steals almost every scene he’s in), the quiet power of Eric Bana and even the gravity of Pitt as Achilles is far more effective than the previous version.

Image quality is superb for both the DVD and Blu Ray verisons of the film (the Blu Ray, of course, gets the nod because the images are much sharper, crisper with better definition but the DVD isn’t too shabby either). Audio for the Blu Ray is presented lossless while the DVD’s audio sounds terrific given the limitations of the format. Colors are a bit bolder here than on the previous version to my eyes.

It appears that a lot of the special features from the previous edition have been ported over and the only new things are the introduction by Petersen as well as a retrospective 23 minute interview where Petersen discusses the genesis of the original film and this project.

This film version much more closely resembles what he had in mind when he took on the project. Greek mythology purists will find some of the changes disturbing but some of the changes enhance the film pulling the strands of the story together a little tighter.
Car Insurance On Line Quote
First Car Insurance Rates

As a big proponent of reading and using one’s imagination. I enjoyed the concept behind Barney’s Book Fair.

Every time I think that my girls have “out grown” the big purple dinosaur I am pleasantly surprised to find him and his friends creating a new experience or teaching a new lesson that will intrigue and sustain my daughters’ attention.

The book that accompanies the DVD is nicely illustrated and will help your child learn to count. Barney videos are truly a staple of childhood.Barney: Book Fair

Lionsgate is a premier producer of both adult and children’s DVD entertainment for the home. This DVD specifically for preschool children is especially recommended as wholesome entertainment. In “Book Fair” (book/DVD combination) everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur takes children on a storybook adventure demonstrating how reading can help their imaginations engage in such diverse activities as building a make-believe rocket, putting on a circus, or creating books of their own! A superbly produced DVD, highly recommended, that will provide viewing fun and playtime entertainment over and over again.
First Car Insurance Rates
Cheap Motor Insurance

I’ve avoided this movie for the longest time because Demi Moore was in it. Isn’t that silly? Even though I’ve enjoyed many of her movies, I just couldn’t believe that a movie this important with her in it would receive the historic treatment it deserved. I could not have been more wrong. I was deeply engrossed from the first scene, and could not tear myself away. Demi herself is amazing, but the screenplay and the scenery, the production and the details pulled me right into the story and would not let me go until the very last scene — and I absolutely loved the ending! This is an amazing work of art — and I’m glad I finally had a chance to see it. Once I had, I knew I had to add it to my library — a collection of what I consider to be only the best representations of our culture and our history.

There’s a disclaimer which flashes on the screen at the beginning of this 1995 film. It says it is “freely adapted from the novel” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Then it goes on to tell the famous story through the eyes of twentieth century feminism, sexual freedom and politically correct happy endings. I must admit I never did read the book, but I’ve long been aware of the general plot, set in 1666, of an adulteress forced to wear the scarlet letter “A”.

Demi Moore is cast as Hester Pryne, the adulteress, and we all know what’s going to happen to her. She’s been sent to America to establish a home; her husband is supposed to be following soon. She shocks the good people of the Massachusetts Bay Colony when she insists on living alone, with the help of a couple of bondsmen and a female black slave. I doubt if Hawthorne’s book then had the local minister, played by Gary Oldman, do a little nude swimming on Hester’s property. I also doubt that Hawthorne had her peeking, getting excited and sensuously soaking in a bathtub, displaying her own nude body and thinking about the pastor. The couple declare their love for each other but it is only after they think her husband dead that they consummate their relationship. Her pregnancy is a crime and she spends the last six months of her confinement in a horrible prison. Then she is forced to wear the scarlet letter and is shunned by all. She refuses to name her lover, and so Oldman sulks around town, looking guilty but keeping his mouth shut. This is a great role for any actress, but Demi Moore just can’t handle it. She might have a nice body but the expression on her face seems to be frozen, incapable of the subtleties, passion and despair that the role calls for. Gary Oldman is slightly better, but his portrayal of the weakling pastor is also one-dimensional.

The film is saved, however, by the role of Robert Duvall, who appears late, but yet steals the show with his impassioned portrayal of the wronged husband bent on revenge. He dominates every scene he’s in and a single expression on his face tells more about his character than the combined performances of the rest of the entire cast. The story is a good one, and it moved fast enough to hold my interest, especially since there were some action scenes added that Hawthorne had probably never intended. That’s why I can’t recommend it unless you’re willing to just relax and watch a well-plotted historical romance with mediocre acting.
Young Drivers Insurance
Low Auto Insurance Rates

The Five-Star Collection is Fox Studios’ top-of-the-line releases. Movies like French Connection have already made the list, and now Fox debuts the greatest anti-war movie of all time, M*A*S*H. The basis for the long-running TV series (which also debuted recently on DVD), M*A*S*H introduces us to the antics of Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland), Trapper John (Elliot Gould), Hot Lips (Sally Kellerman), and Radar (Gary Burghoff).

Altman’s black comic masterpiece doesn’t have a solid plot so much as a series of skits and sketches about life during the war. From golfing 5 miles from the front to suspension of marital promises to trying to figure out why people are dying all around, M*A*S*H handles the gruesomeness of stupidity of war in the only way possible – if you’re not laughing, then you’re going to be crying, so it’s probably better to laugh.

And what a way to bring this classic to DVD – the movie has never looked so good. For being 30 years old, it looks great after Fox’s extensive restoration and is presented in its original theatrical ratio of 2.35:1 with an anamorphic transfer. There’s some grain here and there, but the colors are exceptionally vibrant, with great contrast on the blacks and whites especially. The sound mix is a decent DD 2.0, which is fine considering that the movie is mostly dialogue, but the lack of a more dynamic soundtrack was noticeable during the football game and any time there was music. There are enough extras to make up for it, though, including Altman’s commentary track, three featurettes including A&E’s “The Story of M*A*S*H” and a 30-year cast reunion that’s both touching and funny.

The lack of the DD 5.1 soundtrack doesn’t sully the otherwise pristine quality of the rest of this 2-disc set. It’s a must have – get it now. Now, trooper! Now!

M*A*S*H is one of the zaniest and most intelligent satires ever produced by Hollywood. This is a war movie in which only two shots are fired — as signals in a football game. It is a masterpiece of wider appeal — even to veterans — than is suggested by its setting in Korean War military hospitals, or by its director’s explicit aim of promoting liberal opposition to the Vietnam war during the ’60s and ’70s.

The 2002 two-disk M*A*S*H special edition from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in many ways is a benchmark for DVD releases of cult movies. Picture and sound quality are high. The special feature content is entertaining and insightful.

This content includes extensive retrospective comment by director Robert Altman, producer Ingo Preminger, former studio boss Richard Zanuck, scriptwriter Ring Lardner Jr, actors including Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Sally Kellerman, Tom Skerritt, John Schuck and Gary Burghoff, and medical veterans of the Korean War. We see the 30th anniversary M*A*S*H reunion at Fox, and presentation of a studio life achievement award to Altman.

The special content gives fascinating insights into the driving half-mad genius that so often makes a great director, and of egos and bigheartedness in movie making.

Almost everyone, from the scriptwriter to the studio executives and the actors, lined up against the director at some time. Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould once even tried to get Altman fired, fearing that he would damage their careers. In the M*A*S*H special edition features they eat their words and graciously pay tribute to Altman. Former studio boss Richard Zanuck says that until Altman came along other directors were afraid of the screenplay or didn’t like it. ‘Altman came in, and seemed unruly enough to be able to understand this subject matter.’

M*A*S*H was made on a shoestring budget with Fox’s Century Ranch standing in for Korea. It emerged from chaotic creative tension as an enormous artistic and financial success. Altman accepted a salary of only $75,000. His son Mike is reputed to have made more money from writing the lyric to the keynote ballad, ‘Suicide Is Painless’, with Johnny Mandel. Altman kept costs down by casting the movie with mostly unknown and out-of-work actors. 14 of the movie’s 30 speaking roles were played by actors making their screen debut. Shooting finished three days ahead of schedule in 1969, and almost half a million dollars under budget. M*A*S*H went on to earn more than $80 million at the box office, a Palme d’Or at Cannes and an Oscar (for the heavily reworked script of formerly blacklisted scriptwriter Ring Lardner Jr), and to inspire a long-running popular TV series.

This is a rare thing: a five star classic movie in a five star DVD release.
Low Auto Insurance Rates
Car Insurance On Line Quote

The extended DVD of “Return of the King” is filled with many new and extended scenes that will please fans who love Tolkien’s original story. The July 26, 2004 San Diego Comic Convention featured a preview of many scenes, some introduced by Peter Jackson himself. (Some of these scenes were recently featured in the sneak preview trailer at Lord of the Rings.net, although now it seems to have been removed). In reference to a couple of reviews on the board here — if you’re waiting anxiously for the Scouring of the Shire, don’t hold your breath. That segment was NEVER filmed by Jackson, therefore it will NOT be included in the extended edition DVD. But there ARE plenty of great scenes to be included:

· We hear Christopher Lee’s booming voice echoed over a dark screen that lightened to reveal Saruman on top of Orthanc. He warns our heroes of something festering in the heart of Middle-earth and that they will all die.

· There are numerous shots of the Houses of Healing with Faramir, Eowyn, and Merry all seen.

· A lot more looks to be added to the siege of Minas Tirith, as there was a bunch of new battle footage.

· Frodo and Sam venture into the Crossroads and a few clips from that section were included.

· The Mouth of Sauron is featured pretty heavily. If you’ve played EA’s Return of the King video game you’ll recognize the scene. The Mouth of Sauron rides out of the Black Gate and presents Frodo’s mithril coat to the Fellowship.

· Aragorn reveals himself to Sauron by approaching the Palantir in Minas Tirith and wields Anduril to show that the Heir of Elendil was alive.

· We get to see more of Saruman later in the preview when he knocks Wormtongue down and also fires a giant fireball from his staff that engulfs Gandalf on Shadowfax.

· There’s more of Frodo and Sam in Mordor after they join the column of Orcs and before they discard their disguises. In one scene, Sam looks to the dark sky of Mordor and tells Frodo that he can see light as one little star can be seen glimmering through the clouds.

· And yes, we will finally get to see Gandalf facing down the Witch King. It happens exactly as we’ve seen, but when Gandalf holds up his staff the Witch King pulls out his sword and holds it to the sky where it spouts flames. As he brings it down, the air around the burning sword is distorted.

That was just the preview. New Line treated fans to three full clips, with the third introduced by Peter Jackson himself:

· There was a nice scene of Pippin and Faramir in Gondor where Faramir explains to the Hobbit how the small Gondorian armor he was wearing belonged to a young son of the Steward when he was a kid. Faramir further explains how Boromir was always the soldier and he wasn’t.

· A scene that takes place about five days after they were healed by Aragorn features Faramir and Eowyn on a balcony at the Houses of Healing where Eowyn falls for Faramir.

· The Paths of the Dead is extended from where it ends in the theatrical cut. After Aragorn poses his offer, the dead laugh and go back into the walls. A massive earthquake starts, and the Three Hunters must escape an avalanche of millions of skulls.

· Described, but not shown, another scene expanded in this edition is the scene where Pippin finds Merry on the battlefield. Now, Pippin searches the field for an entire day after everyone else has gone back into the city. He finally locates Merry at night in the new version of the scene.

Just a few weeks to go till the “Return of the King” extended edition hits the stores!

Peter Jackson proved me wrong when I said, like many people, that Lord of the Rings would be a bust: Spielberg-adventure at best, Lucas-disaster at worst. Had I known Tolkien’s classic was in the hands of the guy who directed Heavenly Creatures, I would have been more optimistic. As it turns out, my expectations were completely overturned. In some ways the films are actually better than the books, especially in terms of emotional power. Competent actors, amazing cinematography, and a brilliant music score combine to offer us Middle-Earth as we’d never imagined it.

Fellowship of the Ring is the most polished film, with its elegant episodic pacing. We start in the idyllic world of the hobbits and flee with Ringwraiths hot on our heels; we rest in Elrond’s sanctuary and plunge into Moria; we come out grieving and console ourselves in Galadriel’s safe (yet unsettling) dream-wood, and then wind up surrounded by Uruk-hai. This is a quintessential fantasy road-journey containing three episodes within an episode, each beginning in a haven and followed by a dark journey. The pacing is flawless, and the plot unfolds to a perfect beat.

Two Towers is the ambiguous film. It’s excellent (or at least the extended version is) but structured in a way that the hobbits become sidelined by the Rohan story. As they are the soul of Tolkien’s epic, we feel slightly nonplussed at their consignment to B-storylines. Ironically, the film is a showcase for cgi characters Gollum and Treebeard, who manage to steal the show from within these storylines.

Return of the King is the most dramatic film, tragic on almost a biblical level, and certainly the most satisfying. I can understand why Elijah Wood calls it “better than one and two combined”. It centers on the hopeless mission to Mount Doom, which, as every fan knows, is the heart of the story. Around this we’re bombarded by apocalyptic chaos and destruction on the Pelennor Fields, followed by Aragorn’s hopeless march on the Black Gate. We finish at the Grey Havens, the best ending in literary and cinematic history, which encapsulates all of Tolkien’s themes: courage, friendship, suffering, and passing on. It just doesn’t get better than this.

Peter Jackson deserves more accolades than I’m capable of heaping to the point of overkill. Minor quibbles aside, the extended versions of these films are masterpieces to be treasured as much as the books. Tolkien’s classic may be pure, but the movie’s cinematography takes us where even the written word cannot go. Tolkien’s writing is irreplaceable, but Howard Shore’s music taps deeper into Middle-Earth’s soul. The text is sacred, but the scriptwriters changed it anyway so that it could actually work on screen. The entire project has been too good to be true, and I’m still in awe of it.
Cheap Motor Insurance
First Car Insurance
